Jakubi – Holiday EP (2015)

Can everybody shout Hey-oh to Jakubi?! Fresh Melbourne band on the scene, with a ripper 18 months behind them, it seems that the future holds strong promise. They have already been remixed by up-and-coming Norwegian heavyweight, Kygo. Like so many great bands, they have kept it in the family, with the band being 2 brothers, 2 cousins and a mate. They won’t be held down by genre either! Combining reggae-funk bass lines and guitar pops, with melodic rap verses and voice-box solos. They have a similar sound to the talented Gym Class Heroes front man, Travie McCoy.

“So dope,” the accolade dropped on the track Couch Potato by professional gossip Perez Hilton, which is exactly what could send these boys skyrocketing. It’s almost a perfect summary, really. The chorus has that perfect ‘festival sing-along’ feel. The voice-box solo at the end really puts your brain in a mental hammock and sends it off drifting.

Can’t Afford It All has the most distinctive sound, smooth rap verses over a reggae-inspired clean guitar sound. The wailing voice-box solo at the start is the perfect intro. Feels Like Yesterday blends such an amazing funk bass riff with popping drum beats. The powerful lyrics are centred around the brothers upbringing with a single father and is done justice by this emotional performance. Feels Like Yesterday is the dance anthem of the EP, which is sure to get you bouncing. Final word on this immaculately structured song: wait for the breakdown, it is so casually powerful, it’ll have you on the rewind button.

I can’t wait to hear more of what Jakubi release, because this truly is the start of something beautiful. They’re on tour at the moment too! So get up, you bloody Couch Potato, and hit one of their shows. This way you can say you ‘saw them before they were cool’.
